Parent Involvement in the Long Island Head Start program provides opportunities for parents to grow, discover, achieve, and gain skills of benefit to themselves, their children and other family members. Through their involvement, parents increase their skills and confidence level which enable them to better provide for their children's long-term development and education.

The primary objective of Parent Involvement are:

  • Provide a plannes program of experiences and activities which support and enhance the parentsl role as the principal influence in their child's education and development.
  • Provide a program that recognizes the parents as:
  1. Responsible gardians of their childrens well being
  2. Primary educators of their children
  3. Contributors to the Head Start Program and to their communities

Parent Involvement also provides oportunities for parents to actively participate in the program by their:

  • Direct involvement in the decision making process at the Policy Council level, which involves the parents in the program's planning and operations
  • Participation in classroom and other program activities as paid employees, volunteers and observers
  • Planning of activities for parents which they have helped to develop as a member of the Center Parent Committee
  • Working with their own children in cooperation with Head Start staff
Parent Involvement will, in collaboration with other Service Area's and program staff, continue to make every effort to provide methods and oportunities for the involvement of ALL Head Start parents.
